Tsarskoe Selo brings a banner exhibition on the Cossacks to the Volodarsky Local History Museum, our partner in the Donetsk People's Republic.

Titled The Cossacks in Service to the Tsar and Fatherland: From the 16th Century to 1917, it is based on our last year's large-scale exhibition at the Cameron Gallery.

The theme of the exhibition is relevant because the settlement of Volodarsky was founded by the Cossacks in 1831 as Khutor Gladky. It was named after Osip Gladky, a Cossack ataman (chieftain), until 1855. Volodarsky is one of Cossack settlements that appeared thanks to Emperor Nicholas I's permission for the Cossacks to settle on unoccupied lands between Berdyansk and Mariupol near the Sea of Azov.

While exploring the Cossacks' history and traditions, the exhibition highlights their intrinsic link to the history of Russia as border defenders, war participants, and new land discoverers. Their civilian life is also covered, as well as the ethnic and social composition of Cossack hosts.

The exhibition consists of the following sections:
- The Origins of the Cossacks
- Imperial Atamans: The Cossacks at the Imperial Court
- The Cossacks in 18th-Century Wars
- The Cossacks in 19th-Century Wars
- The Cossacks in 20th-Century Wars
- The Cossacks in 1917
- Cossack Uniforms, Equipment, and Armament
- Cossack Regalia
- The Cossack Guards

Besides the information banners, Volodarsky Museum showcases such Cossack artefacts from its collection as a uniform, a shashka sword, and a variety of everyday items.

Supported by Tsarskoe Selo Friends Society, the exhibition will run until 14 June 2027.
