Bridge restored

17.10.2026

The late-nineteenth-century Sluice Bridge in the Alexander Park is restored after over a year of work.

The bridge stands where the Krestovy Canal meets the Children's Pond. Its span was designed similarly to the park's other bridges built in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Sluice gates were added to control the flow of water, and a lock to lift or lower small boats between the different levels of the pond and canal, often used for boat rides by the children of Emperor Nicholas II.

The bridge is spanned by metal trusses supporting its new metal deck, which replaced a deteriorated wooden deck from the 1990s. The railings feature cast-iron posts and a decorative wrought-iron grille with floral motifs. The trusses are embellished with cast-metal ornaments.

After its last restoration over thirty years ago, the Sluice Bridge showed signs of needed repairs since the early 2020s. The new restoration project was developed and executed by experts from the Specialist scientific restoration centre.
