Tsarskoe Selo is set on reconstructing the frames of the pictures to be put on display in the interiors of the Alexander Palace after its ongoing restoration.

The first two that have their frames remade are The Annunciation by Susanna Renate Granitsch and Madonna and Child by Paul Thumann.

Both paintings are from the Palisander Drawing Room, whose designer Robert (Roman) Melzer in 1896-97 used palisanderwood (rosewood) as the main decorative material there. One of Nicholas and Alexandra’s favourite interiors, the Palisander Drawing Room already has its wall lining fabric, curtains, palisander wall panels and fireplace with a textile insert and facet mirrors reconstructed.

The two (beech and pine) frames with mastic ornaments were made in 2019 by Pavel Yankolovich (The Annunciation) and Svetlana Fiodorova (Madonna and Child) of St Petersburg’s Rocaille Workshop. The masters used the Museum’s 1930s photographs and 1939 inventory listing the dimensions, materials and decoration techniques.

The Palisander Drawing Room and some other interiors of the Alexander Palace will open for visiting in summer 2020.
